Neighborhood

Exclusive and elegant, Nob Hill is home to some of the grandest mansions and most historic hotels one can find in San Francisco, including The Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, Stanford Court, Huntington and Ritz Carlton. Nob Hill is part of an enclave made accessible in the 1870s by the addition of cable cars climbing up California Street through the heart of the neighborhood. The area is considered the center of old San Francisco, where even today descendants of some of the original founding families of San Francisco keep residences and continued memberships at renowned private clubs, including the Pacific Union Club in the old Flood Mansion. The University Club is nearby as are the Olympic, Bohemian and Metropolitan Clubs.

All but destroyed in the fire after the earthquake of 1906, Nob Hill remains the most prestigious of San Francisco addresses including in some of the most the extravagantly adorned buildings that line every street. Huntington Park is certainly the heart of Nob Hill. Home to the iconic 10-foot Fountain of Tortoises, a replica of the original in Rome, once on the Crocker estate, where families enjoy the park's shady expanses to take a rest following a hike up the hill. At night the fountain is lighted, lending a celebratory ambiance to the park. There is also a children's playground and lovely gardens with public benches for daily gatherings.

The spiritual center of the community is found in the impressive stone architecture of Grace Cathedral. Serving the city, the institution administers an array of social outreach programs, and brings inspiration through the many musical concerts it hosts throughout the year. Also on the grounds is an outdoor meditation labyrinth. Here visitors traverse the garden in silence as part of a meditative reflection on their own lives and the lives of others.

The top of Nob Hill remains a very historic and walkable area. It is an urban oasis for residents while never being too far from the bustle of downtown. Perfectly situated, it is near the excitement of concerts at the Masonic Auditorium, sites and bites in Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Aquatic Park, as well as the activities of Union Square and the downtown Financial and Theatre districts. For those not interested in walking uphill, a cable car is the way to go...  Now that's traveling San Francisco style!
